Vic Estrada is an editor of the Horizon Report. During an interview with Education Vanguard she discusses how the paradigm shift in education requires educational organisations to rethink teaching and learning in the twenty-first century. With this in mind, schools must consider how we will invest in technology that supports teaching and learning.
A focus should be on how to create learning environments where students can use technology to impact student learning. Vic Estrada discusses some ways that this is happening in schools. For example, developing new perspectives by using drones to visit places that are otherwise impossible to observe. Technology can be used to create virtual spaces where students can collaborate globally on projects and engage in deeper learning.
Educational organisations must consider what skills students will need to be successful after high school. The definition of success needs to be redefined as we think how technology can support vocational and individual pathways for learning.
Investing in technology that serves pedagogy is more than just providing funding for digital devices and the technical support. The developments in technology are reshaping teaching and learning, and it is important that the people who are working with the students are part of the decision making. Teachers must be inspired and empowered to facilitate the changes. Investment decisions should be considered holistically with a focus on the school’s mission, values, and strategic plan. Schools must communicate effectively to key stakeholders by using research and experts to help develop an understanding of the benefits of the systematic changes.

"Teachers must be inspired and empowered to facilitate the changes." This is key. One without the other (inspired, empowered) will most likely not result in long term change. Do your current leaders provide both? How can you as a leader provide both?
